surge maniacs

Well, the Bush leaguers have begun beating the drum on the surge, telling us in various ways and across the media that Georgie Porgie's latest "plan" is working and that we should just sit back and let Uncle Dick and The Chimp take care of business over there. But it's clear that the so-called surge isn't working; at best, it's merely a weak cork in a highly pressurized bottle of highly volatile gasoline (what else?).
Already this week (it's Wednesday) we've had at least nine U.S. troop deaths (including five in a downed helicopter), a blown-up bridge in Baghdad, several horrific bombings (including one event that claimed as many as 200 deaths) and who knows how many sectarian killings. This may be defined as success by those war-loving hawks in the Bush administration, but not by any objective rationale.
And, yet, the drumbeat will continue now and between Sept. 15, as to how the surge is working, how we should have patience and how we, the American people, should continue footing the bill for Georgie Porgie's immoral, illegal war. As for the mounting violence between now and then, the generals will say it's because of the Sept. 15 deadline for reporting how the surge is doing. But this rationale misses the point, which is: the Iraqi insurgents are able to perpetrate these acts dispite the additional 30,000 troops the Bush administration has thrown into the meat grinder.
This is madness and the only sensible solution is to bring our troops home now. Now, not next year or five years or whatever. Now!
